Tiffany & Company (New York)
Ogden Goelet and James Gordon Bennett Cup, 1894
This historically important silver yachting trophy was co-sponsored by two of America’s most important late nineteenth-century yachtsmen, Ogden Goelet (whose wealth came from vast real estate holdings in Manhattan) and James Gordon Bennett, Jr., (owner of the New York Herald). While each of these patrons commissioned or sponsored yachting trophies independently, this object is the only known surviving trophy they sponsored together.
Stylistically this trophy blends Beaux Arts classicism with the fluid movement found in Art Nouveau designs. The sculptural nature of the vase makes it one of the most outstanding examples of yachting trophies created by Tiffany and Company.
