Gustave Le Gray is recognized as one of the pioneers of photography as art. He was among the earliest photographers to perceive the artistic potential of the new medium. Brig on the Water was recognized as a technical tour de force due to Le Gray’s ability to successfully capture the varying brightness of the landscape and the sky. Le Gray's maritime photographs are among his most important works since these images illustrated how light—at its most brilliant moment—could define a scene.
