The Dutch photographer Rineke Dijkstra is best known for works like this one: large-scale color images of single standing figures—adolescents, soldiers, bullfighters, young mothers—who gaze directly at the viewer. The simplicity and even starkness of her compositions allow for no escape, urging us to engage with the personality placed before us. The gawky twelve-year-old here may appear defenseless as she moves into adolescence, yet she still retains the innocence and serenity of childhood.
