Dale Chihuly: Installations

April 18 through June 27, 1999

Dale Chihuly: Installationsa retrospective exhibition of three decades of the glass master’s work is a core element of Art of Glass. For the Center’s exhibition Chihuly will create site-specific installations of hundreds of multi-colored and formed works of glass. Several of Chihuly’s extraordinary, massive chandeliers and examples of every phase of his work from the elegant Sea Forms, Japonesque Ikebana and baroque Venetians, to his undulating, glistening stage designs for Debussy’s opera Pelleas et Mélisande, will also be on view.

Progressions in Glass: Chihuly’s Associates

July 17 through September 5, 1999

Nine glass artists closely associated with Dale Chihuly – Martin Blank, Pat Davidson, Paul DeSomma, Joey Kirkpatrick and Flora Mace, Benjamin Moore, Richard Royal, Bryan Rubino, and Cappy Thompson – will present their unique creations in Progressions in Glass. An astonishing collection of brilliantly colored hot glass explores the material properties of the medium, its fluidity and translucency. The artists, having assisted Chihuly in creating his masterpieces at the Boathouse or instructing at Pilchuck Glass School, have achieved national acclaim and are represented in such prestigious collections as the Renwick Museum of American Craft and the White House Collection. Some works are especially commissioned for the Center and will be presented for the first time. This exhibition provides all glass enthusiasts with the opportunity to see spectacular vessels and sculptures made by some of the most renowned artists from the Northwest.
