"CAC Members Only" Children’s Painting Workshop

Contemporary Art Center members are invited to watch the spectacle as 30 students, ages 9 and up, participate in a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to paint with international art "superstar" Dale Chihuly. This dynamic process is colorful and messy, as Dale and his 30 students squeeze, squiggle, and splash paint in a rainbow of colors onto paper and Masonite board on the floor. Dale’s favorite CDs provide inspiration for this spontaneous and active approach to painting. Many volunteers are needed. Call (757) 425-0000 for information. Pre-registration is required and begins April 1.

Glass Harp Concerts

Approximately 600 elementary students have been invited to attend two concerts at the Contemporary Art Center by internationally known glass harpist Jamey Turner. Turner has appeared on the Today Show, the Tonight Show, Sunday Morning with Charles Kurault, and on the cover of National Geographic in 1993, as well as having performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra, among others. He is also a gifted educator. Following gallery walkthroughs, Turner will give an hour-long "informance" for students and teachers in the Center's theatre. Teachers will be provided with pre-visit curriculum materials.

The Magic of Glass: Glass in History, Industry and Technology

Learn about glass in context in this visually exciting and educational exhibition researched, written, designed, and installed by high school students! This curriculum-based interdisciplinary exhibition, a joint project of the Contemporary Art Center of Virginia and the Virginia Beach City Public Schools Office of Career and Technical Education, represents a unique and exciting partnership. Five Virginia Beach high schools have joined forces to create an educational exhibition on the role of glass in society: (1) First Colonial (history and culture of glass); (2) Green Run (recycling); (3) Kellam High School (writing and editing of exhibition labels); (4) Ocean Lakes (glass in industry and technology); and (5) the Technical and Career Education Center (design and production). Students and teachers chose topics and specific content based on what was most closely integrated with curriculum objectives. These participants have enthusiastically embraced the challenge of providing a social, scientific, and technological context for Dale Chihuly: Installations.
