The Art/Learning Initiative
The Art/Learning Initiative will bring the works of art in
our care to life for children and adults in our community.
It will ensure that the Museum’s collections and exhibitions
are accessible, meaningful and relevant to the lives and concerns
of our visitors.
With the eventual launching of the digital learning center
the Chrysler’s borders will expand world-wide allowing
access to the Permanent Collection via the internet. In addition
to being a valuable resource and research tool for artists
and Museum professionals around the world, students and Museum
patrons may also visit the Museum’s Collection whenever
they like from the convenience of their classrooms or the
comfort of their home.
A significant capital project is the renovation and enhancement
of the Museum’s workshop facilities. Generously underwritten
by the Norfolk Foundation, the Norfolk Foundation Art Education
Center was designed by Pentecost Deal and Associates of Norfolk.
The firm recently won an A.I.A. Award for Outstanding Design
Achievement for the Museum’s new Education Center. The
newly designed space will have updated computer equipment,
five Murphy tables, a semi-concealed bank of six sinks, specialty
lighting, fabric-covered acoustic tack able panels, and a
new Docent Lounge and Director of Education Office. This will
be a high-energy space, with a lot of color that can be used
as a classroom, lecture venue, or as a gallery for student
work.
The other significant construction project of this initiative
is the development of a visitor orientation gallery. The Virginian
Pilot has made this project a reality through a generous donation
to the Campaign. The Virginian Pilot Orientation
Gallery will greet visitors to the Museum, providing them
with a variety of information that will enhance their experience
as they travel through the many galleries and exhibitions.
Resources will be available for all visitors including an
introductory video, computer access and other materials. Families
will find information and activities to enhance the experience
of their children, bringing fun and excitement to their Museum
visit.
