In 1971 Walter P. Chrysler, Jr. brought
his world-class art collection to Hampton Roads and in one
stroke transformed a modest provincial museum into an institution
of international importance. In the thirty years since that
donation the Chrysler has earned a well-deserved reputation
for the quality of its collections, special exhibitions, and
educational programs. The Museum has become a true community
center.
Unfortunately, however, the donation of
Walter P. Chrysler, Jr.’s collection was not accompanied
by a comparable gift of endowment funds to support the operations
of a vastly larger organization. As a result, the Chrysler
Museum has been undercapitalized from the start. The struggle
to secure the support the Museum needs to serve the people
of our community has resulted in the launching of the Campaign
for the Future – a $40 million capital and endowment
campaign.
Through the Campaign for the Future
the Chrysler Museum will raise $40 million to secure its continuing
vigor in the 21st century. The success of the Campaign will
enable the Museum to meet its fundamental goal: making the
experience of great works of art in its care vital and rewarding
for the people served.
Since the public launch of the Campaign
in October 2001 the community’s response has been most
gratifying. More than 250 individuals, foundations, and corporations
have stepped forward with pledges totaling more than $30 million.
