Preston Gannaway: Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea
Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Preston Gannaway will share the stories behind the photographs and discuss her journalistic process of creating the five year long documentary essay and book, Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea. Based entirely in Norfolk's Ocean View neighborhood, this is Gannaway's first time back in Norfolk showing the work and signing books.
Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea is a documentary project on the changing character of a working-class neighborhood along the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia. By exploring residents' relationship to the environment over the course of five years, Gannaway reveals both the dark and light facets of this complicated community.
Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea has been featured in New York Times Lens, American Photography 29 and 31, Oxford American, The Half King Photography Series, CNN, and Wired Raw File, among others.
Copies of the book will be available for purchase and the author will be available for signing.
This illustrated talk is free.
