Of Glitter and Grit: American Painting from the McGlothlin Collection

Susan J. Rawles, PhD, joined the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in 1995 and specializes in American material culture of the colonial and revolutionary periods. She served on the VMFA’s installation teams for the new American Art galleries in 2010 and the James W. and Frances Gibson McGlothlin Collection in 2015. She co-authored publications for both installations. Rawles holds a doctorate in American Studies from William & Mary, a Master of Arts in the history of art from Rice University, and a Bachelor of Science in economics and government from Smith College. This program has been organized by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and is supported, in part, by the Paul Mellon Endowment and the Jean Stafford Camp Memorial Fund.

Each Norfolk Society of Arts event begins at 10:30 a.m. with a coffee reception in Huber Court. The lecture follows at 11 a.m. in Kaufman Theater.
