Third Wednesday: Glass Art as Performance Art
Christopher McElroy and Colonial Jamestown Glassblowers
Untold Stories: The Origin of Glassblowing in Virginia
This evening spanned centuries of glass art and was hosted by Christopher McElroy and Ashley Jerman. The journey began in Jamestown, with European glassblowers landing in America (note the cardboard ship pictured at bottom) before moving to the 1960s and a secretive moonshine distillery in the mountains of western Virginia.
As the furnace glowed orange, and later as hazy plumes overflowed from bootlegger beakers, the amazing one-man band Phil Roebuck kept the crowd stomping. For more photos by Echard Wheeler, scroll down.
