Charles Moore's photographs of the dog and water cannon attacks on Civil Rights Demonstrators in Birmingham were published as an 11-page spread in the May 17, 1963 issue of LIFE magazine. The day Moore took this picture, he was hit by a concrete block thrown from a roof. Limping, with shattered tendons in his ankle, Moore continued covering the breaking events for several days. To stop him from recording the violent events, he was arrested on May 7. He jumped bail the next day, and for a year was unable to reenter Alabama, where he and his family resided. This is one of four photographs by Moore in the Chrysler collection. All are from his Civil Rights Movement work in Birmingham.
