February 5, 1865
Albumen Print, 17 x 13-1/2 inches
Gift and purchase, David L. Hack Collection

Gardner photographed Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865) at least thirty-seven times, more than twice as often as any other photographer.  This image of Lincoln with his fourth and last child, Thomas (1853–1871), who was known as Tad, was made at Lincoln’s last formal portrait sitting.  A mischievous lad, Tad was known to parade around the White House dressed in a Confederate uniform.
