This image was the frontispiece of The Movement, a book documenting the struggle for equality. The book was published in 1964.

Declan Haun began working at the Charlotte Observer as a photographer at the age of 21. In 1963, he moved to Chicago where he spent the next 15 years of his career as a freelance photographer. His clients included National Geographic, LIFE, LOOK, Time, and The Saturday Evening Post. He was represented by the Black Star picture agency. His interest in photography was not limited to the printed page, rather he had a great concern in establishing himself as a fine artist and print maker. His photographs were exhibited in numerous museum exhibitions including John Szarkowski's, The Photographers Eye, at the Museum of Modern Art.
