Three 19th- and 20th-Century Paintings Donated to the Chrysler
-- January 2003

The Museum is delighted to announce the recent donation of three 19th- and early 20th-century paintings from the collection of Nat R. and Mary Jane Coleman of Norfolk and Greenville, Tennessee. The gift includes Henri Fantin-Latour’s lyrical The Rhinemaidens of 1880, one of several small-scale fantasy paintings by Fantin which reflect the influence of Richard Wagner’s music; Jean-Louis Forain’s Courtroom Scene, a fascinating instance of late-19th-century Parisian genre painting; and James Ensor’s haunting canvas The Docks at Ostend, 1900. A major pioneer of European Expressionism, the Belgian Ensor ranks among the most important artists at work in Northern Europe in the decades around 1900. Though best known for his macabre depictions of fighting skeletons and masked carnival figures, he also produced an important series of landscapes and marine paintings, including the present work, which exhibit the same disquieting mood and unsettling pastel palette. The three paintings are a major addition to the collection, and the Museum extends its deepest thanks to the Colmans for their generous gift.
