Opening on December 12, 2001, the first in a series of exhibitions highlighting the Chrysler's extensive decorative arts collection will be devoted to silver. This inaugural show will explore various aspects of the care and collecting of silver, including fakes and forgeries, and the proliferation of silver forms in the mid-19th century. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn techniques of caring for their own silver as well as methods to help determine whether a piece has been altered. A display will illustrate the different hallmarks and makers' marks.
A section devoted to collecting will be in place for the connoisseurs of the decorative arts. Local collectors have identified a significant number of 19th-century silversmiths in the Hampton Roads area and have made large number of donations of silver to the Museum since its inception as the Norfolk Museum of Arts and Sciences. The Chrysler has been fortunate that it has become an important repository of the works of local silversmiths. Additionally, as Walter P. Chrysler, Jr. was extremely interested in Art Nouveau decorative arts of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, there will be an installation of some of the finest pieces from his extraordinary collection.
