New Contemporary Collection Installation

The Chrysler’s McKinnon Galleries of Modern Art have a brand new look. Rather than adhering to the traditional practice of presenting works in an historical sequence, the new installation of the Museum’s contemporary art galleries is as much thematic as chronological. The Museum’s goal has been to provide provocative juxtapositions and visual groupings as a way to encourage visitors to look and think and ask questions of the artworks they encounter.

The installation mixes straightforward thematic/historical rooms—spaces dedicated to Pop Art, and work by African-American artists—with galleries where works in different styles from different eras are contrasted. Explanatory text panels introduce each room as well as describe the rationale for the groupings of art on view.

Unlike most areas of the collection, where available space allows for the Museum to show the vast majority of its finest objects on a continual basis, space for the display of contemporary art is limited. For this reason the new installation is designed to change every six to nine months so that an ongoing selection of well-known and less familiar works may be shown.
