If ever a company symbolized the spirit of corporate giving, that organization would be the Norfolk Southern Corporation. In the past 20 years, the company has given over $1 million to the Chrysler Museum of Art through corporate and matching employee gifts. Prior to their membership in the Business Exhibition Council -- the Museum's premier Corporate Membership category -- Norfolk Southern was a major contributor to the Corporate Annual Fund. In 1998 Norfolk Southern was the honored guest at the annual Major Donor Dinner for its gracious and continued support of the Museum.
The company's involvement in the Chrysler extends far beyond their financial support. Former Chairman, Arnold McKinnon and his wife, Oriana, have given tireless hours and good counsel to the Museum, serving as board members as well as spearheading the Museum's long range strategic plan. Susan Goode, wife of current CEO David Goode, similarly gives countless hours as a trustee in addition to her efforts to raise awareness and funds for the Museum's Historic Houses.
Through January 6, 2002, Norfolk Southern shared a portion of their 500-work art collection with the Hampton Roads community with the exhibition Pop to Postmodernism: Contemporary Prints from the Norfolk Southern Corporation. Within this exhibition were 20 exceptional prints spanning three decades of experimental printmaking, including rare prints by Pop artists Jim Dine, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, and Robert Rauschenberg.
Through the Business Consortium for the Arts, The Norfolk Southern Corporation supports other aspects of the cultural life of Hampton Roads with contributions to the Virginia Opera, the Virginia Symphony, and the Virginia Arts Festival. As David Goode states, "No society can be strong or hope to survive without encouraging the arts. As a businessman who wants to build for the future, I believe in being vigilant in supporting the cultural and artistic life of our communities throughout the country."
The Chrysler is grateful for Norfolk Southern's vision and commitment to the Museum and the Hampton Roads community.
