Andy Warhol |
In his Myths screenprints Warhol isolated each of the fantasy figures featured in his painting of the same title. He further enhanced the nostalgic allure of these childhood characters -- such as Howdy Doody, the witch, and Superman -- by sprinkling each print with a layer of diamond dust, a material he had first used the previous year in his paintings and prints of Shoes. Produced in the manufacture of industrial diamonds, the powder gives the prints a sparkling surface texture. Warhol's interest in decoratively worked surfaces was already evident in his commercial drawings of the 1950s, several of which he embellished with gold leaf and silver foil. |
